Darlene Shura, Executive Director

Senior Editor/Trainer

Darlene is a recognized expert in applying clear writing strategies to every manner of communication challenge - including the challenge of communicating complex, technical information to public audiences. She specializes in supporting organizations in the public sector, financial services and technology sector.

She launched the Canadian Centre for Clear Language as a first step to create a national body of clear communication expertise. She is also involved in international initiatives to create a certification program for clear communication experts.

Darlene has been privileged to lead many of the Ontario government's clear writing initiatives since 2006. This includes leading special Cabinet Office initiatives to modernize the Ontario government's briefing notes, news releases and job ads. She has also trained thousands of staff at all levels, from senior management to Assistant Deputy Ministers to new hires.

Darlene is also a regular guest lecturer at the University of Toronto School for Public Policy and Governance and a repeat guest expert on CBC, NewsTalk 1010AM and Dale Goldhawk on 740AM in Toronto.

Darlene is a former Director of PLAIN (Plain Language Association International) and member of the Editors' Association of Canada.

Katy Unger

Business Development Director; Associate Editor & Trainer

Katy heads up business development and client services at the Centre. She has a decade of combined experience as a business development professional and a writer, editor, trainer and champion of clear communication. She has spent time on Bay Street in Fintech firms as well as working in the non-profit sector and on government clear writing initiatives. She has also recently completed a program at Harvard in website design and development, with a focus on clear web design.

At the Centre, Katy’s work includes designing and building websites, writing and editing digital content and hosting virtual workshops. Her writing and training credits include major plain language initiatives at the Ontario government, the Canadian government and Ontario Securities Commission. 

Katy is a member of the Editors’ Association of Canada and the Plain Language Association InterNational (PLAIN).
